Happy Saturday & National Help A Horse Day! 🐎
It might just be the happiest time of the year! MLB is in full swing, the NBA and NHL are in the playoffs, the NFL is drafting the future stars of the league, and, most importantly, Churchill Downs is open for business starting today for their Spring meet. The opening day of Churchill officially kicks off Kentucky Derby week, and the Run for the Roses is just around the corner.
Our friend Bill loved this time of year because once the draw was announced later today, he had a full week to study the horses in preparation for the big day in May. It also made it easy for us to decide which tracks to analyze throughout the week; Bill preferred straightforward choices, allowing him to focus his mental energy on evaluating the horses.
If you haven't guessed already, we're heading to Louisville, KY, to play the ponies at Churchill Downs today. The card features 10 races, including one stakes race, and offers plenty of opportunities for the jockeys to familiarize themselves with the course. The featured race today is the $200,000 Roxelana Stakes, which is a six-furlong sprint on the dirt track for fillies and mares aged four years and older. There will be seven runners in the featured race, as the five horse has scratched.
The weather tonight is expected to be beautiful, with temperatures ranging from the mid-50s to mid-60s throughout the card. The track is rated fast, and the turf is firm, promising an exciting night of racing! After tonight, Churchill will be dark until Wednesday and will run through next weekend.
We will be sharing our picks each day of the meet this week as we lead up to the Kentucky Oaks on Friday and the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. There is a huge party planned at the place where we all met, the Glass Turtle in Roseville, CA, for the Derby. Bill was the originator of this gathering, and we will be honoring him by renaming the annual event to the William "Bill" Lundin Kentucky Derby Party.
If you would like to pay your respects to Bill, please like, comment, share, or simply read this post. If you want to remember him with us, we invite you to join us next week at the Turtle.
Need help picking winners? We've got you covered! Our (Always Free) Lundin Line's top picks and best bets are below. We use them to help narrow the field while putting our tickets together. The first post will be here soon, so don't be late -

Churchill Downs, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is a historic horse racing venue best known as the home of the Kentucky Derby. It was officially opened in 1875 by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of famed explorer William Clark, who was inspired by European racing traditions. The track quickly gained prominence with the inaugural running of the Kentucky Derby, which has since become the longest continually held sporting event in the United States. Over the decades, Churchill Downs expanded its facilities and reputation, undergoing major renovations while preserving its iconic twin spires, which were added in 1895. Today, it stands as a symbol of American horse racing tradition and culture.
