Happy 502'sDay & National Shrimp Scampi Day! 🍤
We did not have to wait long to get back on the track in Louisville, KY, at Churchill Downs. We are gearing up for a huge two days with the Kentucky Oaks on Friday and the Kentucky Derby on Saturday. To prepare for this, we are capping the ponies all week, starting today with a nice nine-race card. Although there are no stakes races scheduled for today, this allows us to ease into what will be a long week ahead.
The featured race is the eighth race, a 1 and 1/8 mile route on turf, boasting a purse of $141,000 and open to three-year-olds and up. There will be ten runners in the race, but with 11 eligible, if we see one of the entries scratched, it would allow the alternate to participate.
The weather is expected to be a bit unpredictable, with highs in the upper 70s and a chance of thunderstorms. Be sure to keep an eye on any changes or potential race delays later in the day before finalizing your tickets.
We are excited to be back at the track early in the week and will be here every day leading up to Derby Day. While 502's Day typically falls on May 2, this year it is celebrated today, as Oaks Day is happening on Friday May 2nd. We are pleased to see the track giving back to the community and welcoming even more fans who may not be able to attend the larger events.

502's Day is a fun celebration that recognizes May 2nd (5/02) and is often associated with various festivities and events, especially in Louisville, Kentucky. The day has become a local tradition, sometimes linked to the excitement around the Kentucky Derby, which takes place on the first Saturday in May. It's an opportunity for the community to come together and enjoy various activities, including food and drinks. The celebration might also coincide with other special observances, like National Shrimp Scampi Day, which adds to the festivities!
Churchill Downs, located in Louisville, Kentucky, is a historic horse racing venue best known as the home of the Kentucky Derby. It was officially opened in 1875 by Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of famed explorer William Clark, who was inspired by European racing traditions. The track quickly gained prominence with the inaugural running of the Kentucky Derby, which has since become the longest continually held sporting event in the United States. Over the decades, Churchill Downs expanded its facilities and reputation, undergoing major renovations while preserving its iconic twin spires, which were added in 1895. Today, it stands as a symbol of American horse racing tradition and culture.
