Happy Saturday & Ides of March!
We are back on the Derby/Oaks trail today, returning to New Kent, Virginia, for the final day of racing in the Spring meet at Colonial Downs! Yesterday was tough for our top-rated picks; we managed to hit only one first-pick winner and three second-pick winners. Our return on investment (ROI) for this meet is quite poor, but that won't deter us from providing you with our picks today. It only takes one strong day to turn things around and make for a profitable week.
Today's card features 10 races, with the only stakes races being the Oaks and Derby preps. Traditionally, the Virginia Derby is run on turf, but this year it has moved to dirt to serve as a Kentucky Oaks prep race. All races today will be on dirt, with four sprints and six routes. Our two highlighted races are the eighth and ninth of the day.
The Kentucky Oaks Prep is an 8.5-furlong route for three-year-old fillies. Based on the current Oaks standings, the winner of this race will likely secure a spot in the starting gate for the Kentucky Oaks, which takes place the first Friday in May. Gowell's Delight leads today’s field with 16.5 points, while only a few others have earned points.
In the ninth race, a nine-furlong route on dirt, we expect a showdown between John Hancock and Getaway Car. One of these horses will aim to take the top spot on the leaderboard and guarantee a spot in the starting gate for the first Saturday in May. The winner of today’s race will earn 50 points; if John Hancock wins, he will tie Coal Battle at the top, while a victory for Getaway Car will allow him to take the lead.
We’ve included the current standings so you can see where your favorite horse stands and how they could improve with a top finish today.
Today's weather is expected to warm up, with highs in the low 70s and mostly cloudy skies. This should lead to a fast track, setting the stage for an exciting day of racing!

"Some people’s familiarity with the Ides of March may be related to 16th century Shakespeare and his famous line “Beware the Ides of March” from his play, Julius Caesar. But it is necessary to go back several hundred years before that, before the turn of the first century, to truly get to the root of this holiday". To learn more - click HERE
