Happy Thanksgiving!
Last week we welcomed back racing at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, our nation's third-oldest racetrack, in operation since 1872. This 152nd season will see 73 stakes on the schedule worth a combined $9.7 million. The 76-day meet will certainly witness a plethora of drama and excitement, including The Road to the Derby series, which begins on Dec. 23 with the Gun Runner Stakes, the Claiming Crown on Dec. 2nd (the first time at FG since 2011), and, today we have the 99th running of the 200K Thanksgiving Classic, one of many stakes purses that will be the recipient of a 1.2 million increase from last year.
Let's start with a little Thanksgiving History as we are thankful for each person who reads our posts almost daily!
1621: First Thanksgiving thought have taken place
1863: Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each Nov.
1924: Macy's becomes the featured presenter of the Thanksgiving day parade
1934: Detroit Spartans play first Thanksgiving Day NFL game
1966: Dallas Cowboys play their first Thanksgiving Day game
2023: 99th running of the Thanksgiving Stakes at Fairgrounds
Whew, that's a lot of history there so let's get to it! Today's card has 10 races with of course the featured race coming in the 9th for the Thanksgiving classic. It's currently raining in New Orleans but it should clear up as the first post leaves the gate we hope. Its going to be a mild day with highs in the mid 50s. As of the writing of this post we have a fast track and good turf meaning today should end up being a great day of racing!!!
