Happy Monday & National Empanada Day!
While there is technically one more derby prep next week, today marks the end of the Kentucky Derby trail. We are at Keeneland today to wrap up the opening weekend since this card was originally scheduled for Saturday. The rain has cleared out in the area, and we are looking forward to a better day for our picks.
Yesterday was tough, with many scratches leading to a disappointing outcome. We also missed a few races, which happens. We only hit two top picks and three of the top two picks, resulting in a poor return on investment since all of them were favorites that didn’t pay much.
Today's card features a total of 11 races, including five stakes races and a Derby prep where 100-50-25-15-10 points will be awarded to the top horses. The featured race is the Blue Grass Stakes, which takes place in the 10th race. This is a 1 1/8 mile Grade 1 route on dirt with a purse of $1.25 million! We’re hoping for no scratches, as having fewer than six runners would limit the points awarded.
We are less than four weeks away from the Kentucky Derby and are excited to see the final standings announced once the last prep is run next week. The weather today is expected to be cold, but we will have sunny skies. As of now, the track is fast and the turf is in good condition, which should keep our picks intact today.
The Blue Grass Stakes was inaugurated in 1937 and has since become one of the most important prep races for the Kentucky Derby. Originally held at the now-defunct Keeneland Association’s old track before moving to its current home at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Kentucky, the race quickly gained prestige for attracting elite three-year-old Thoroughbreds. Over the decades, several Blue Grass winners have gone on to achieve success in the Triple Crown races, including legends like Whirlaway and Strike the Gold. While the race was once run on a synthetic surface from 2007 to 2014, it returned to dirt to better align with the conditions of the Kentucky Derby. Its rich legacy and role in shaping Derby fields have cemented the Blue Grass Stakes as a cornerstone of American horse racing tradition.
