Happy Saturday & National Corndog Day! 🌽🌭
We finally made it to the weekend! In the big basketball tournament, 32 teams have been eliminated, but the road to the Kentucky Derby is really starting to heat up. That’s right—today marks the first official win, and you’re in the races! We have four major stakes races showcasing the top three-year-olds from across the country. We ran a bit behind yesterday, so there will be no recap of Turfway from last night. We will be bouncing between two tracks today, so make sure to lock in those tickets before they leave the gate at the right track. There are plenty of opportunities today to cash in, so let’s get started!
First up, at 9:45 AM Pacific, we head to Kentucky to watch the ponies at Turfway Park. This card features a total of 13 races, including six stakes races, an Oaks "win and in" prep race, and a Derby "win and in" prep race. The featured race is the 12th on the card, the Jeff Ruby Steaks (GIII)—yes, named after the steakhouse—which is a nine-furlong route on the all-weather synthetic track with a purse of $777,777. The top five horses will earn 100-50-25-15-10 points toward a starting spot on the first Saturday in May, also known as the Kentucky Derby. The name of this race has led to jokes about being hungry or needing a snack, based on how they spell it compared to other major races. Just before the Derby prep race in the 11th, the ladies will take to the synthetic track in pursuit of 50-25-15-10-5 points in the Bourbonette Oaks. While this isn’t as many points as the other races, the winner will undoubtedly secure a spot in the starting gate on the first Friday in May, also known as the Kentucky Oaks. The weather in Florence, KY, is set to be great, with highs in the mid-50s and mostly sunny skies. The synthetic track has been rated as fast.
Not long after the first race ends, the card at Fair Grounds Race Course kicks off at 10 AM Pacific. As mentioned, we have a full day of racing, with this card featuring 12 races, eight of which are stakes races, along with one Derby prep and one Oaks prep. Both the Derby and Oaks preps will award 100-50-25-15-10 points to the top horses, and even a second place could get one of these competitors into the starting gate the first weekend in May. The featured race comes in the finale of this card: the $1,000,000 Louisiana Derby (GII), a 1 3/16 mile route on the dirt track, which could reveal the winner of the big race in May. The ladies will be on the track just before this race as they compete for a spot in the starting gate in the Fair Grounds Oaks, a 1 1/16 mile race on the dirt with a purse of $400,000. The weather in New Orleans will be warm, with highs in the mid-70s and sunny skies. The dirt has been rated fast, while the turf has been rated firm.
