It's Saturday which means the derby prep trail continues so we are headed to Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, AK. Sounds like Deja Vu right? Well, that's because last month we were here for a prep race. Today though, the stakes are even high where one lucky three year old will look to vault into 2nd place, and one horse can take over 1st, in the rankings by taking home a victory in race 11 the Rebel Stakes. Today's prep race will award 50-25-15-10-5 points to the top horse and further clear up who will be running that first weekend in May! "The Rebel was inaugurated in 1961 as the Rebel Handicap and was changed to the Rebel Stakes in 1984. That same year, the distance was adjusted from one mile and 70 yards to 1 1/16 miles. In 1990, the race was given Grade 3 status but was ungraded in 2003 and 2004. It was upgraded to Grade 2 in 2008." If you want to learn more the Kentucky Derby has a lot of good info on this race.
Today's card includes 12 races, three of which are stakes, and as discussed above features race 11 the $1,000,000 G2 Rebel Stakes. Running conditions are looking very wet and we should have a sloppy track. Oaklawn is a dirt only course so no chance of your favorite horse scratching if they moved off the turf but you will need to dig deep to help find the ponies that love to get dirty. Temperatures are in the high 40's with rain forecast most of the day so might as well stay home and cash some tickets!
