Our LundinLine travels to beautiful Bensalem Township, PA, for some mid-week racing at Parx Racing.
Parx Racing, formerly Philadelphia Park, was known as Keystone Racetrack from its opening day on November 4, 1974, until International Thoroughbred Breeders (ITB) purchased the Bensalem oval on Dec. 28, 1984. It was in this year that Turtle Sports' own Mr. W. visited his first racecourse when his older brother gave him a break from his studies at Temple University in Philadephia (home of the Owls) one evening, treating him to dinner & playin' the ponies at Philadelphia Park. Years later, Mr. W. would go on to "great success" at the OTB bars during many a lunch hour whilst "working" in downtown Philly. (note: great success is a relative term).
Philadelphia Park changed hands again in December of 1990, with Greenwood Racing, Inc. taking control of the reins. Parx Racing came to national attention when a Pennsylvania-bred chestnut colt named Smarty Jones began his career at the Bensalem track. Smarty Jones won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes in 2004 and finished 2nd in the Belmont. Smarty Jones brought worldwide attention to the Bensalem Racetrack and became instrumental in passing the long-awaited Slots Bill. On July 4th, 2004, PA Governor Ed Rendell signed the bill into law in the Winner’s Circle of Philadelphia Park.
