Happy Saturday & Preakness Day 🏇
It's the day we have been building up to the last two weeks, the second jewel of the Triple Crown! That's right we are headed to Baltimore, MD, and Pimiloco Racecourse for the Preakness Stakes. Did you know, that Pimiloco's name is derived from the 1660s when English settlers named the area where the facility currently stands in honor of Olde Ben Pimlico's Tavern in London? As we said today is the second leg of the famed triple crown of horse racing. Mystik Dan will look to become the first Derby winner to win the Preakness since Justify won the triple crown in 2018. Will he take the second leg and be as famous as California Chrome, the last winner of the first two legs not to win the triple crown, or will we continue our five-year streak of a different horse winning this race who did not win the Kentucky Derby? No matter who wins today their name will go down in history!
Today's card has 14 races, yeah it's early out here on the West Coast, nine stakes races, five of which are grade stakes, and lottsa runners to keep you entertained all day. As noted the featured race comes in race 14, the Preakness Stakes. This is a 9.5 furlong route on the dirt track which will have 8 starters. This is a much smaller field than the Derby so it will be a much different race. The weather is not cooperating today as rain moved in the area overnight. There will continue to be a 50% chance of rain all day so make sure to check those tickets before submitting as scratches may come up we are not seeing yet. They are listing the track as fast and the turf as good, so it's possible the worst of the changes are done.
