Happy Saturday & National Deep Dish Pizza Day!
It's been a tough day as this is our first weekend capping the ponies without Bill. If you knew Bill, you would remember how he would sit at the bar and reflect on the week, searching for a track where he could achieve 100% wins with our top picks and make a few wagers to win some extra beer money. He was not a man who shied away from risk; in fact, he preferred placing a $2 win bet or a $4 pick-3, rather than risking $20 on a potential big win in a pick-4 or pick-5. However, if he was betting for any of his friends or "grand kids," you could bet that money mattered even more to him, and he would be willing to take risks for them.
Bill loved the lead-up to the derby because he had a whole week to study each race, looking for that horse others might overlook, or confirming that the favorite was indeed his top choice. We named our horse racing algorithm after him because he was the one who brought us all together during COVID to help us take our minds off things. He proposed that there must be a way to use different metrics to identify winners. Bill will be missed immensely, and it was hard not to reserve a spot for him to cap the big races today.
If you didn’t know Bill, please take a moment to enjoy a “Top Shelf” (a Coors Light) this week and on Derby Day, to remember this gentle soul. R.I.P. William "Bill" Lundin. Dance with Shirley, and send us some good vibes to keep finding winners in your honor!

We will never stop capping ponies, as Bill would haunt us if we did. So, let's head to sunny Southern California and play the ponies at Santa Anita Park. Today, we have 12 races, including five stake races, with a Derby and Oaks prep featuring relatively small fields. The Oaks prep will award points as follows: 50, 25, 12.5, and 7.5. The Derby prep will offer 75, 37.5, 18.75, 11.25, and 7.5 points. However, there's a stipulation: to award the full 100 points, there must be at least six runners in the race.
Several horses in the field are already secured a spot in the starting gate in four weeks, making it interesting to see if they will try to steal points to keep other contenders out of the Derby. Ultimately, it will be up to the trainers to make that decision.
Today's weather is fantastic, with highs in the upper 70s and mostly sunny skies. The track is expected to be fast, and the turf will be firm, paving the way for some exciting performances as we move toward that big weekend in May.
Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia, California, is one of the most iconic horse racing tracks in the United States. Opened on December 25, 1934, it quickly became a premier venue for thoroughbred racing. The track was developed by a group led by Dr. Charles H. Strub and movie producer Hal Roach. During World War II, Santa Anita was temporarily closed and repurposed as a Japanese American internment camp. After the war, it resumed racing and became home to prestigious events like the Santa Anita Handicap and the Breeders’ Cup. Known for its picturesque setting against the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Anita remains a cornerstone of American horse racing.
