Santa Anita Park 🏇🏾// Sat., April 6th, 2024

Happy Saturday & New Beer's Eve 🍻

Our triple header comes to a close here on the West Coast as we head to Sunny So Cal to play the ponies from Santa Anita Park. It's happy hour for most of the country so grab an adult beverage and let's finish strong today. Our final win and in Kentucky Derby Prep race will truly shake up the standings as this will all but finalize our field for the first weekend in May. I say first weekend as we are handing out the final points on the Kentucky Oaks prep trail as well in race 6 the GII Santa Anita Oaks. This is a small field of five fillies where all five will earn Oaks points. 100-50-25-15-10 are handed out, and the top two move into the starting gate on the first Friday in May. This is a nine-furlong route on the dirt just as our last prep race from Aqueduct was. The featured race today comes in race 10, a popular place on the card today as all three prep races fall in R10, The GI Santa Anita Derby. Just like our other two prep races today, this is a 9-furlong route on the dirt and will hand out 100-50-25-15-10. Only two horses in the eight-horse field have any derby prep points so this race is very important to those who will start in in about four weeks. Keenland has the biggest purse today but the SA Derby is handing out $750K just like AQ. This race has produced 11 winners of both the SA Derby and Kentucky Derby, with two of those winners coming in the last decade. California Chrome nearly won the triple crown in 2012 after winning this race and Justify not only won the SA Derby and Kentucky Derby, he went on to be the last triple crown winner back in 2018. Many people knock the California racing circuit for small fields, high takeout, and lack of interest, but if history is correct we have a good shot at seeing a strong outing at the Kentucky Derby by a horse who runs the Santa Anita Derby.

Today's card has 12 total races, five stakes, with three of those being graded stakes winners, and plenty of opportunity to hit some nice winners. The weather will be typical for this time of year as we will see mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid-60s. There is no rain in the forecast so we are looking at a fast track and firm turf all day!
