Happy Saturday & National Dadgum That's Good Day!
We have an exciting day of racing this Saturday as the road to the Kentucky Derby and Oaks heats up, and we are betting on the ponies from coast to coast! We’ll kick off our day by covering the full card on the West Coast at Santa Anita Racecourse in Arcadia, CA. We're relieved that we are no longer reporting on fires in Southern California, and we’re even happier to see the recovery underway.
Today's card features 11 races, including four stakes races, all of which are Grade 1 or 2. There's also a prep race for the first weekend in May. Don’t worry, the ladies will get their chance tomorrow to earn spots in the Oaks, but today is Big Cap Day, with the featured race as the 10th race.
Our main focus is on race eight, the San Felipe. This is a Kentucky Derby prep race where points will be awarded as follows: 50-25-15-10-5. Although this race has only six starters, it will include three of the leading contenders for the Derby and could easily showcase the fastest speed and pace among today’s prep races. Both Journalism and Rodriguez could tie for second place with Citizen Bull if they secure a win today. Meanwhile, Bob Baffert’s coveted Barnes is looking for his first points of the season, as he started on the Derby trail a bit later than others.
All three of our cappers have made their selections for this race. Finky is the outlier, while Mr. W and Bill believe the same horse will race ahead and not look back. Want to know more? Check out the details below!
This prep race takes place after two East Coast races, so make sure to jump back and forth between tracks to maximize your chances of cashing tickets with us. If you're interested in the Big Cap, there’s a wealth of information on that race, including excitement around the return of Locked, the winner of the Cigar Mile and runner-up in the Pegasus World Cup.
The weather today will be wonderful, with highs in the low 60s under partly cloudy skies. The track is fast, and the turf is firm.
Santa Anita Park, located in Arcadia, California, is one of the most iconic horse racing tracks in the United States. Opened on December 25, 1934, it quickly became a premier venue for thoroughbred racing. The track was developed by a group led by Dr. Charles H. Strub and movie producer Hal Roach. During World War II, Santa Anita was temporarily closed and repurposed as a Japanese American internment camp. After the war, it resumed racing and became home to prestigious events like the Santa Anita Handicap and the Breeders’ Cup. Known for its picturesque setting against the San Gabriel Mountains, Santa Anita remains a cornerstone of American horse racing.
