Anyway, now that I am done going down memory lane let's get to the action and play the ponies from Saratoga Race Course in New York! The Spa is taking a break from Breeders' Cup qualifiers but that does not mean there is not plenty of opportunity to cash some tickets. Today they offer up 12 races, two stakes, both are graded, and lottsa runners. The featured race race comes in the 10th where the ladies will take center stage. The Alabama Stakes is a G1 8.5 furlong route on the dirt with a prize pool of $600K. This race is restricted to three-year-olds only, so you know you will see great competition as a few of these horses ran the biggest race during the triple crown season. The Alabama Stakes has a rich history at Saratoga, it was run at Belmont during WWII and is named after William Cottrell of Mobile, Alamaba because he would not allow the race to be named directly after him. The inaugural running took place on July 19, 1872, and was won by a chestnut filly named Woodbine owned by prominent New York financier August Belmont Sr.
The weather today looks like it is going to cooperate as we will see highs in the mid 70s, cloudy skies, but no rain in the forecast. The track is fast and the turf is good, so we are looking to limit scratches today with this report!
