Happy Wednesday & National Absinthe Day! 🍸
It's also hump day, and to help you get over that hump, we’re warming up for this weekend’s Kentucky Derby prep race by focusing on the mid-week card at Tampa Bay Downs. Normally, when we play the ponies in Florida, we're in Southeast Florida. However, today we’re heading Northwest to get a feel for the course and try out our capping style.
Today's card features nine races, but there are no stakes races, so we won't see the large pools we typically expect for a Florida card. The weather is looking fantastic, with highs in the low 70s and partly cloudy skies. This will result in a fast track and firm turf, as it seems the rain will hold off for now. For more information about this racecourse, we have provided some historical insights below.
Reflecting on the past weekend, we had an excellent two days at Santa Anita Park. On Saturday, three of our top picks and nine of our top two picks won their races. On Sunday, we saw success with six top pick winners and eight top two pick winners. Despite a solid number of winning horses, our return on investment (ROI) for the weekend was -15% for top picks and +13% for top two picks.
We hope you were able to capitalize on the winning selections we provided at Santa Anita. Finky did particularly well, correctly picking Journalism in the prep race. However, Journalism only earned 37.5 points instead of the full 50 due to the size of the race. This performance shows he has potential as a Derby contender, but he will likely need one more top finish to secure enough points to enter the starting gate.
Unfortunately, our handicappers missed the winners at the other two significant Derby preps: Flood Zone at Aqueduct in the Gotham and Sovereignty in the Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park. Congratulations to both winners, who each earned 50 leaderboard points and shifted the standings this week.
Looking ahead, we have just one more race that offers 50 points before we move into the much-anticipated "win and you're in" races, where winners will earn 100 points, while the other top finishers will receive 50, 25, 15, or 10 points. With many points still available over the next two months, let's take a look at our current standings.
Top Ten on the Road to the Kentucky Derby:

Tampa Bay Downs, located in Oldsmar, Florida, is one of the oldest thoroughbred racetracks in the United States, opening in 1926 as Tampa Downs. Over the years, the track has become prominent, attracting top horses, trainers, and jockeys. It is known for its winter racing season, drawing competitors from nationwide seeking warm-weather competition. The track features a one-mile dirt oval and a seven-furlong turf course, hosting notable races like the Tampa Bay Derby, a key Kentucky Derby prep race. In addition to horse racing, Tampa Bay Downs offers simulcasting, poker, and golf entertainment, making it a multifaceted venue for sports and gaming enthusiasts.

"Often mistaken for a liqueur, it is truly a spirit because it isn't sweetened. It belongs to the vodkas, gins, and whiskeys when categorizing absinthe. The spirit is made by infusing wormwood, fennel, anise, and other herbs into alcohol through distillation. Pierre Ordinaire, a French doctor, is credited with creating absinthe. He developed and prescribed the elixir in the early 19th century to cure many illnesses."
