We’re back for another great day of racing, and today we’re zeroing in on a single track so we can focus and find you more winners. Last Sunday we took it easy and shared our Lundin Line top-rated selections for the all-turf Pick 3 at Del Mar — and if you structured your ticket correctly, you got In The Money with a sweet $350 score. Today we’re headed back to sunny San Diego and Del Mar Racetrack for a strong 11-race card featuring three stakes races, including a Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series event.
Today’s feature is the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes, a six-furlong sprint on the dirt for three-year-olds and up with a $400K purse. The winner earns a spot in the Breeders’ Cup, specifically the Cygames Sprint, right here at Del Mar in November. Last year’s winner, Lovesick Blues, came back to finish sixth in the BC Sprint.
Both our cappers landed on the same top choice: #6 Cornucopian, a four-year-old brown colt trained by Bob Baffert. Cornucopian has run four times this year, winning three, but failed to hit the board in his other start — which also happened to be his last Grade 1 attempt. Lifetime, he’s started seven times with four wins and one place. The concern is that his lone Grade 1 try last year, the Arkansas Derby, saw him finish off the board and drop off the Kentucky Derby trail. Baffert may well have moved this horse forward and our cappers could be spot on — but there’s still a chance he’s just shy of true Grade 1 quality and could struggle again today.
Weather-wise, it’s another perfect day in San Diego. A light morning fog should clear to mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid-70s. The main track should be fast and the turf firm, with no rain in Southern California so far this summer.
