NFL power rankings are weekly or periodic lists that rank all 32 NFL teams from best to worst based on their overall strength, current form, and roster quality, rather than strictly by their win-loss record. Analysts use them to evaluate how teams stack up against each other at any given moment.

Pickles Week 1 Power Rankings

Week 1 kicked off Wednesday night with a Super Bowl rematch that turned ugly almost immediately when Sam Darnold went down on Seattle’s opening series. Drew Lock looked like a backup, but Drake Maye did not look much better, throwing three interceptions while his receivers struggled with drops. The game fell well short of expectations, with Seattle winning 13-10. Darnold is expected to miss several weeks.

Thursday night in the United States was Friday morning in Australia, and the 49ers showed why traveling early and acclimating to the time difference can matter. While the Rams arrived later and played through the overnight schedule, San Francisco got into town early. From this amateur’s perspective, it looked like the right approach. The Patriots and Rams should both be fine in the long run, potentially for years to come, while the Seahawks and 49ers got their seasons off to strong starts.

The rest of the week features 14 games: eight in the early window, four in the late window, and, as usual, one game on Sunday night and another on Monday night.

When these posts go live, you may notice that we generally avoid taking games early in the week—particularly Thursday night games—unless there is an unusual circumstance, such as Week 1. We know many people find value in these early-week games, but we typically see too many unknowns to make them contest plays.

This week was different, though, as our team saw an opportunity to get an early win and move up the leaderboard. The MyBookie SuperContest is unique because the contest lines adjust along with the broader betting market. You do not have to wait for midweek numbers that may already be stale; if your handicapping identifies a play, you can jump on the line immediately. If the line moves for or against you, your picks are not locked in until kickoff. You can take the extra half-point if you still like the play, or get off the pick and pivot, as long as the game has not started. That flexibility is one of the things that drew us to this contest. Too many times, we have made a contest play only to see a quarterback or starting defensive end get hurt in practice, putting us at a disadvantage before the games even begin.

Here is our contest breakdown for the year:

  • MyBookie: three SuperContest entries and six survivor entries

  • Splash: three private-league survivor entries and one player-survivor entry

We also entered a few small contests to add some fun this year, using free play we had available. The Prop Queen player survivor is another interesting contest in which you select one player each week and accumulate fantasy points throughout the season. The catch is that you can select each player only once, with the points adding up as you build a fantasy team and try to score as many points as possible.

We have never done anything like this before, but we thought, “Why not give it a shot?” Join us here each Sunday for a look at our contest picks and a recap of the early-week games.
