Pickles Week 1 Power Rankings
Last week, we stepped outside our normal routine, and it showed in our contest results as we experienced significant regression across the board.
At Turtle Sports, our approach has always been built around preparation, discipline, and trusting the process. From the beginning, the goal has been simple: do the work, evaluate every angle, trust the numbers, and stay #InTheMoney. That philosophy began in the spring of 2020, when Turtle Sports started as an idea among friends and developed into a defined methodology and a distinct point of view.
Unfortunately, last week we moved away from that approach. We went against our usual rule of avoiding survivor and ATS plays on Thursday because we wanted to stay with the pack. Instead of trusting our normal process, our thinking was, “Let’s keep pace with the field and try to slide by.” We all know how that turned out. The decision cost us two revival entries and served as a reminder that there is a reason we have established rules in the first place.
To make matters worse, we took the London game and needed an enormous amount of luck to survive. We may have used up our good fortune for the year. Sometimes a bad process can still produce a favorable result, but that does not make the decision a good one. The bigger lesson is that we cannot rely on last-minute breaks and fortunate outcomes to carry us through the season.
The good news is that we are still alive in the big survivor contest and have three entries remaining in the revival. That gives us a chance to regroup, get back to our process, and make better decisions moving forward. Survival contests are not won by chasing the crowd every week. They are won by understanding when to take a stand, when to stay patient, and when a difficult matchup is better left alone.
In the SuperContest, we entered the week tied for 35th place. Despite a mediocre Week 5, it remains our best start ever in the competition. That position gives us something to build on, but it also creates a temptation to become too aggressive. Once again, we broke our own rules and hammered the Thursday home underdog after identifying what we believed was a bad spot for the Seahawks.
The goal was to get ahead of the field. After Week 5, everyone seemed hesitant to play Thursday, so we decided to make a bold move and attack the spot. That type of decision can either create separation or put you behind the pack before the week really begins. We are now hoping the risk pays off and that the early move allows us to climb the standings and remain in contention.
Turtle Sports has always been about developing a point of view and having the discipline to stand behind it. The Lundin Line gave us that foundation in horse racing, while our football work continues to evolve through the Pigskin Line, contest analysis, and weekly handicapping. The sports may change, but the principles remain consistent: study the board, evaluate the matchup, identify the value, and avoid letting emotion dictate the decision.
Last week was a clear reminder that we are at our best when we follow those principles. We will take the lessons, hope the Thursday gamble delivers, and get back to doing what Turtle Sports does best — putting in the work, trusting the numbers, and trying to stay #InTheMoney.
Here is our contest breakdown for the year:
MyBookie: three SuperContest entries and seven survivor entries
Splash: three private-league survivor entries and one player-survivor entry
Splash: five Survivor Revival (started week 4)
We also entered a few small contests to add some fun this year, using free play we had available. The Prop Queen player survivor is another interesting contest in which you select one player each week and accumulate fantasy points throughout the season. The catch is that you can select each player only once, with the points adding up as you build a fantasy team and try to score as many points as possible.
We have never done anything like this before, but we thought, “Why not give it a shot?” Join us here each Sunday for a look at our contest picks and a recap of the early-week games.
